Us and Them: Social service in the Church and Society

Even if people set themselves the goal of helping others, when people relate to others as “objects of their help” it can immediately turn any nascent good work into a failure by dividing the world into two classes, whether it be “the strong” and “the weak”, “the rich” and “the poor”, or simply “us” and “them”. Getting over this division is one of the most important tasks for the modern world.
